Positive Field Training

For retrievers, hunters and all dogs that love to fetch!  Don't just sit and watch; get out into the field!  Whether you are a hunter, aspire to compete in hunt tests or field trials, or just love to see dogs do what they were bred to do, Jim and Toby would love to work with you and your dog.  Our program provides lots of options for you to choose:

Our positive gundogs field training weekends offer three levels of training in special weekend seminars for you and your pup.  At our training weekends, you and your dog will sharpen your basic skills, including walking at heel, steadiness and reliable recalls.  You will also focus on gundog tasks including scent work, systematic hunting and retrieving, with each program tailored to your dog's level of training and breed characteristics.

  • We offer private coaching for clients who want to introduce their dogs to field work, to tune their dogs up for the fall season, or prepare for Working Certificate or Hunt Tests.  These 90-minute sessions are tailored to individual needs and can include retrieving on land and in water, gun conditioning, scent tracking, quartering and other skills.  All training uses positive reinforcement.
  • For a more economical approach that enhances the fun, we offer semi-private 90 minute lessons.  Find a friend, bring your dogs, and train together for mutual benefit and enjoyment.
  • When four or more people are interested in an introduction to field training, we will organize a basic field skills class.  The class will meet for eight weeks.  Four weeks are spent on fundamentals indoors, followed by four weeks in the field.  The program culminates in an opportunity to earn achievement awards for all participants.
  • Through a special arrangement with the Gun Dog Club, UK, we are able to offer tests and awards for retrievers, spaniels and pointers from beginner through senior level.  Jim is one of onlly two trainers in the United States certified as an assessor for the club!  This program provides a tangible reward for your and your dog to mark your accomplishments in the field.  For more information, visit the club at: http://thegundogclub.co.uk/home.htm.

All participants in training programs receive a free copy of Jim's book, Positive Gun Dogs: Clicker Training for Sporting Breeds.

All dogs must have current Rabies and DHPP inoculations; Lyme disease vaccination is strongly recommended.  Dogs must be at least six months of age and have permanent teeth.  Dogs should have basic obedience skills, and be able to work comfortably around other dogs.  Specific prerequisites for our week end programs are given in the program descriptions.  Please, no pinch or electronic collars!
