To progress from one step to the next, your dog will perform a series of obedience tasks. The tasks for each step are as follows:
·Step 1: Sit 5 times on alternating verbal and hand signals, watch the handler for 5 seconds, respond to name from across the training room, recall from center of room, loose leash walk across room with minimal distractions. These tasks may be performed with continuous rewards
·Step 2: Down and sit on one cue, puppy pushup (sit-down-sit) , leave a treat in the hand alone for 5 seconds, sit stay for 10 seconds and down stay for 20 seconds with moderate distractions (person or dog moving within 6 feet), recall from across the room, loose leash walk across room and back past a person. These tasks are performed with intermittent food rewards
·Step 3: Sit stay for 20 seconds and down stay for 30 seconds with handler at 10 feet and more distraction (person or dog circling); leave it 5 seconds with treat on floor; loose leash walking on a flat collar past a dog, a toy and a treat; recalls with multiple dogs; automatic sit when a person approaches. Tasks are performed with varied, random rewards
·Step 4: Perform all Canine Good Citizen exercises with verbal and touch rewards; multiple dog recalls on crossing paths, off-lead heeling across room, out of sight stays for 15 seconds
Your trainers will coach you through the step and provide handouts and checklists to mark your progress. You (and your dog) can do it!
