The Reactive Rovers class is intended for dogs that display aggressive or anxious behavior in the presence of other dogs. Some also are reactive to situations involving people or other animals.Reactive dogs require a major training effort as well as lifelong management; if untreated, their behavior can escalate dangerously. The class is an intensive, step-by-step process intended to reduce your dog’s anxiety and arousal so that you can be more confident in challenging situations. For safety and effectiveness, there are certain policies in place for this class:
All dogs will be double-leashed.The preferred method is a head halter and buckle collar on one leash, and a no-pull harness on the other. We strongly recommend two handlers for each dog.If two handlers are not available, we will assist or tether your dog.No observers are permitted.
Any dog that has a bite history must be muzzled. We will assist you in finding the appropriate type of muzzle and getting your dog used to it.
It is important to attend all classes.Dog and handler teams that miss two or more classes will be dropped and no refunds will be given.
Our behavior modification method employs a clicker as a reward marker and the use of high value foods as rewards. The method will be explained during the first class. It must be used for all class activities and homework.
The first class meeting will be an orientation without dogs.At the second class, dogs will arrive separately at 15-minute intervals and work individually.Subsequent classes will include all dogs; arrivals and departures will be managed by the staff.Dogs will remain in owners’ cars until the staff calls for them.
Please wear appropriate footwear; no sandals or open-backed shoes.
Reactive behavior is sometimes a manifestation of medical problems. We encourage all participants to schedule a thorough veterinary examination, including blood work, major organ functions and a complete thyroid panel.
You should also review your dog’s nutrition needs and double its exercise.
Inoculation records must be brought to the first class.
The training staff will handle any a dog fight or bite incident.
The class fee includes six class meetings and a head halter or no-pull harness.Participants are also encouraged to obtain the book Click to Calm by Emma Parsons, available from Dogwise.com by visiting our Training Supplies and Books page.To determine whether your dog is an appropriate candidate for a Reactive Rover class, please contact us. .
